Great Crested Newts

We have just received a report on newts in the fields opposite Merton Drive:

Hi

I read in the latest newsletter that you wanted help from residents who had seen any newts.

We live in Merton Drive on Westminster Park, backing on to the open fields. There are a number of large ponds which we have a good view of and on a number of occasions when moving empty pots and materials our garden, we often find lots of newts – most of them are palmate newts or smooth newts, but sometimes we are lucky to find some great crested newts.

I’ve attached some pictures of the Great Crested newt we found last spring/early summer, when newts are out and about foraging for food and moving back to the ponds to lay their eggs.

regards
